“I finished more paintings, wrote more, joined a book club — and did all of it from a place of easygoing joy instead of panicked juggling.”
You know what you want (or need) to do. Why is it so difficult to actually do?
This is the cycle so many of us find ourselves in:
We care deeply about something, or just need to do something.
We genuinely intend to do it, and then... we don't. Something gets in the way. The week pass.
Then comes the mean internal voice: what is wrong with you. We spend so much energy beating ourselves up than the task ever would have taken.
Over time, that guilt and shame becomes a identity wound (“I am bad”) that corrodes our self-worth and belief in our ability to do anything.
We try everything: Give ourselves a stern talk. Start over on the new moon. Learn every productivity tool, hack or planner under the sun (some of them worked — for a little while.)
What the productivity industry doesn't want us to know: It’s human to ‘struggle’ to follow through.
We live inside systems — capitalism, white supremacy, patriarchy, ableism — that have a vested interest in us being overwhelmed and exhausted, believing that our worth is measured by our output, that rest is something we have to earn, and that if we’re struggling to get things done, the problem is us.
It’s completely and utterly normal to grapple with follow through. Especially when we:
have a gajillion ideas, tasks, and responsibilities on our plates
are in relationships and dynamics that take up so much capacity (even if we love them)
don’t know where to start, the task feels new/big/scary, and we’re afraid of doing it ‘wrong’
were never taught how to do in a way that makes sense for our brain + body
have such high expectations that anything less than perfect doesn’t count
are chronically exhausted from the constant worry of survival and the weight of a world on fire
don’t have the resources—time, energy, money, support, and access
live in a society that devalues certain things (self-care, rest, art, joy, care, and pleasure)
None of that is procrastination. Or ‘bad’ at following through.
Its a completely rational response to the irrational conditions of living in this world.
“Some of the most grounded, specific inner work I’ve ever done.
I was deep in hustle culture, pushing way too hard for the health of my mind, body, and spirit — and I didn’t fully see it until now.”
Willpower or discipline isn’t the answer.
Here’s the quick science:
Research shows shame and pressure don't motivate us, they shut us down. The brain reads shame as a threat, pulling focus away from the task and into survival mode. Shame also kills our motivation to try again after we mess up. So we don't just freeze, over time we stop believing we can.
On the flip side, studies show that when we approach ourselves with compassion, encouragement, and create a sense of internal safety, we light up the brain's reward centers and performance directly improves.
Follow Through Gently
Follow Through Gently is a consent, body-based, relational doing skill.
It is built on the premise that you are not a machine to be optimized, or a failure that needs surveillance and punishment. You are a whole person to be supported.
This 5-week live group program for anyone who wants to stop knuckling their way through and learn a healthy, genuinely sustainable way of doing.
Not productivity for productivity's sake. Not output as a measure of worth. But the deep satisfaction of moving toward what you actually care about without abandoning yourself in the process.
By the end of these five weeks, you will:
Finally understand why you've struggled to follow through, where it came from, and why it makes complete sense.
Have embodied a follow through framework that easily applies to anything in your life — self-care, work, creativity, relationships, activism, habits, and more.
Figure out how to use the tools you already have in a way that feels like they're actually on your side for once.
Unpack the productivity myths you've been handed and finally stop trying to force them on your brain and body.
Fundamentally healed your internal narrative and changed how you relate to yourself as a do-er in the world, deeper than just in your conscious mind.
How our five weeks will unfold
Each week we meet live as a group where we go deep on one piece of the follow-through puzzle. This will help you better understand yourself and learn how to take action effectively + gently + safely.
Week 1 — Seeing The Cycle You're not lazy, broken, or lacking discipline. We start with naming the cycle we’re in, we look at the Follow Through Wound, and start to understand why everything you've been told to try hasn’t worked.
Week 2 — Safety as Effective This week we talk about what actually moves us forward. We look at what genuinely creates follow-through and what it feels like to start doing from a place of safety and consent.
Week 3 — Friction Tending This is where we get into the specific things that stop you from doing: the internal stuff, the relational stuff, and the systemic stuff nobody else is naming. You'll leave knowing exactly what your friction is made of and what to do when it shows up.
Week 4 — Gentle Tools This is where we take everything you've been learning and bring it into the tools and systems of your life: your calendar, your lists, your routines and habits, or whatever else you're working with. You’ll learn how to approach them with safety and consent so they no longer feel rigid, controlling, and constricting.
Week 5 — Becoming a Person Who Follows Through This week is about creating a permanent shift in how you relate to yourself as a do-er. You learn how to consciously see yourself as someone who imperfectly follows through, thoroughly trusts themselves, and worthy no matter how much you get done.
Live Calls Each live call will include a conceptual teaching, an embodied practice, live Q&A, and time to commune with each other.
Recordings All calls are recorded if you can't be there live because life happens, and that's more than okay here.
Weekly hypnosis audio One per week to support what we covered in session from the unconscious, nervous system level making things stick even more.
Workbook Editable Google Doc workbook to further support in reflection and implementation. Will include case studies, research, and science (if you like that kinda stuff).
Signal group chat A space to post when you're up against friction and to be witnessed and celebrate moments of follow through.
Collaborative resource library A living, growing collection of tools, readings, songs, memes, and whatever else we find useful or delightful. Everyone adds freely.
“What surprised me was how much the inner stuff shaped the practical stuff. I thought I just needed better systems. What I didn’t expect was that examining how I thought would be what actually made the systems work.”
Who this program is for
This program is for humans who set intentions and happen to struggle to follow through on them (for any reason). It doesn't matter what area of life, what you do for work, or whether you've tried a hundred other approaches before.
This group could be a great fit if you:
are tired of trying to force and guilt yourself into doing things
believe self-compassion and being effective can coexist
are neurodivergent, chronically ill, or have fluctuating capacity
want a practical framework, not only philosophy or a pep talk
thrive in community and love learning alongside other values-aligned humans
It's probably not for you if you:
want someone to push you harder, not differently
are looking for a strict accountability boot camp
aren’t open to the internal or systemic pieces of why we do or don't follow through
“I signed more clients, got engaged, volunteered for the election campaign, worked through my customer service workflow in Dubsado, and found a way to schedule the tasks that were really important to me.”
Who I am
Hi, I'm Becca Rich (she/her). By training I'm an engineer, which might seem like a strange origin for someone who now spends her days running an anticapitalist project management & operations collective, doing hypnosis, & educating/coaching humans around time liberation.
While I’m a multi-passionate mani gen, one of the main through line in my work is: how do we do without letting it define and consume us?
Follow Through Gently has been taught to hundreds (maybe thousands of people), is trauma-aware, neurodivergence-affirming, anticapitalist, and draws on neuroscience, parts work, somatic and energy-based approaches, and hypnosis.
Just like me, my people are creatives, deep feelers, unconventional thinkers. We don't believe in productivity for its own sake. We believe in being able to do what we need to do, take care of ourselves, and have a life — on our own terms. Despite living in a world that makes that genuinely hard.
